Grooming Your New York City Terrier

As far as I’m concerned a dog in good health is one of the most beautiful things in the world and all because of the wonderful, loving nature that they adopt for us. Before adopting my Mutt I would never have thought that the importance of grooming was one of the most important things that go into making him such a great new family member. And no matter how wonderful a dog is that hasn’t got a place to sleep and a place to lie down or jump up on the furniture there some places that just don’t work. Since we adopted Max we have discovered a whole new world of grooming products and other neat little things that either didn’t work or made us look bends all over ourselves.

And for all the dogs that we have gone on and ruined for not bathing, haven’t had any accidents, and spend a fortune taking them to the groomers are things that none of us ever thought of when we bought Max. A couple of years ago I had an issue with giving the shampoo to Max. He would try and lick it off of my finger many times and in the end if all else fails just trust me and let him lick the bottle. Ever since this has been a thing I have trouble with and I know many of you have the same issues.

Now onto the fun stuff. I won’t bore you with everyday pet care. I know some of you like to talk to your dogs and talk them into doing things for you. I didn’t know until recently, that on a cold day you could actually leave Max tied to your bed with a hot water bottle. The reason I said tie him, is because he doesn’t like to jump very high and he’s a big dog. One time I left him tied up in the bedroom for just a minute. The little furball spun for 2 minutes before he decided to break the bottle. Of course, when we saw the mess, it was too late, but it was surprising and cool.

Some other things to consider in grooming and making your dog look great are:

1. Brush the Dog Regularly. Now I know some of you like to brush every day. I thought that it was just us but we were not alone. When we brush our teeth every day it is a given that eventually we brush Max’s teeth as well. When we took our dogs to get their sets of vaccines last year my vet suggested that we get dental checkups every 3 months. That’s how we discovered that we really enjoy taking our dogs to the vets and doing it on a regular basis. Max loves the process also because it keeps his teeth clean and lets him know when he’s done a good job.

2. Trimmed Nails. Max has light-colored nails so I do not recommend trying to trim them. If you’re not comfortable with trimming your pet’s nails consider a professional. If you’re not planning on trimming your pet’s nails consider all of the other things we do that can affect his health. His food, water, exercise, veterinary care, and other products we use.

3. Teeth Checkup

Every dog should have a dental checkup once a year. If you allow your dog to chew dry food that’s not soft enough to make him swallow it, or if you’re not sure, wait until he’s at least 4 months old when you give him his first set of teeth. The adult teeth which are typically located at the back of the mouth should be firmly pushed out so that they can observe and pronounced. Your dog’s teeth should be clean and without any brown spots. If you find that your dog’s teeth appear unhealthy or are flavorful or a strange color or foul odor then contact your vet. Other than making sure your dog eats a proper diet there are other things we can do at home to keep our dog’s teeth clean.

To help you keep your dog’s teeth clean I have put together a simple remedy. If you feed your dog hard kibble or food that is clicking or that otherwise feasible chew toys, which help limit the damage that bacteria can cause to your dog’s teeth then you should consider making this remedy part of your dog’s daily routine.

Some people even brush their dog’s teeth when they take their dogs out for a walk. We’ve all heard the warnings associated with that so I didn’t think much of it, but then I remembered what my mom told me, which is essential that you should brush your dog’s teeth every day. It’s an easy seven-minute habit that can save you hundreds of dollars in dental work. If you find that it is too difficult, then there are countless products that can actually help keep your dog’s teeth clean. Should you take your dog to the vet on a regular basis, then you should also include taking care of your dog’s teeth at home with no harm to your dog’s health. That is always the best way to go.
